You cant lock a chip at least not that I know of. I'm sure if someone really wanted to they could find a way. But no one does.

Hi,
They are not locked right now but may in the next year or so. What got me going on this is a while back a guy bought a chip from me, returned it and CHARGED back his credit card. Another guy ratted him out to me and showed me a post where he bragged about buying the chip, copying it and returning it. The Charge back cost me alot of time and hassle to deal with on top of that. On average I deal with 2-3 guys like this per quarter.. So its not a big revenue loss.. its just a big slap in the face.
We are thinking about doing a custom adapter that is very locked but has a key avaiable to anyone who wants it.
That way, People can still fine tune the chip all they have to do is ask for a key from me.
This would also give me alot more room on refunds. Right now we have a stated "No refund" policy. I don't like that.. I would rather offer a money back guarentee on the chips performance regardless. Now that I'm sure people just can't "read and return" the chips It will be possible to put a money back guarentee on everything we sell.
This "lock and key" deal I think will benifit everyone as I can afford to give out a no hassle refund if the chip doesn't perform as expected. I really don't see any disadvantages to it.
How do you guys feel about it?

Personally I'm all for the "lock and key" for situations exactly as you described. I can't believe that someone actually has the stones to do that and then brag about it. I hope you e-kicked his ass for that.
At least with the proposed "Lock and key" setup you'd have the ability to feel out the customer and make a decision based accordingly.

The LOCK and KEY sounds good to me also. The reason that I was asking this question is because I'm trying to dyno tune my car, don't know to much about tuning. One of the guys that I know said that he is whiling to help me tune it. Alvin or can I just send you a copy of my dyno runs, because my A/F if a little to lean at WOT.
Thanks,

If you want I can put you in a mail order tune that should get you quite close. If not a datalog and dynosheets are all I need to make revisions to your tune until your happy with it.

I'm glad you guys are ok with it. A reason why we haven't done it before is because we didn't want to lock the customer out from fine tuning his own car. We just wanted to keep the low-lifes out.
There are also people who buy-copy-sale. They usually never get far but they are out there.

Alvin I talked to you a while back about sending you my chip back with my dyno runs but haven't got a chance to do so. In the next week or so I will send it back, then we can go from there. Thanks for all The help.

Actually they dont lock there chips. They do lock there prom flashes though. I can see how you can get bit there Alvin, kinda sucks that people would just try and steal your hard earned tunes and then brag about it. I think that would be a good idea on your part to lock them, but then have a key available to fine tune. I really like being able to fine to things and try to learn a little about tuning. But I could not have gotten this far with out the help from Alvin.
